Learn These 3 Must-Know Tips to Avoid Toxic Candles!

It's no secret that burning a candle can be a one-way ticket to a calmer, more relaxed state of mind.

But have you considered whether the candle you're burning could be toxic to your health? Could you be doing more harm than good?

While many candles are still being made with questionable ingredients, including inferior oils, synthetic fragrances, and paraffin wax, there are also candles made with all natural, nontoxic ingredients and we've done the research on what to lookout for, so you don't make the same mistake twice!

These are the 3 key ingredients to look out for before you buy your next favourite candle.

  1. Wax type

Consider choosing a more natural and sustainable candle made from 100% plant based wax including coconut, soy and beeswax.

Be aware of candles made with paraffin wax, as they are commonly used in candles and are derived from petroleum. The concern with paraffin wax is when it is burned, potentially harmful chemicals (such as benzene and toluene) can be released into the air. These chemicals are known to be carcinogenic and can contribute to indoor air pollution.

  1. Wick type

To ensure that your candles burn cleanly and safely, look for candles made with wicks made from 100% cotton, wood or hemp. These natural wick materials do not contain any harmful chemicals or metals, which can potentially release toxic substances into the air when burned. Not only are natural wicks safer, but they also provide a sustainable, clean and long-lasting burn. It's important to avoid harmful wick types such as lead, zinc, or cotton wicks with a metal core, as these can release harmful toxins into the air, leading to respiratory and other health problems.

  1. Fragrance Source

To be on the safe side, look for candles made with 100% essential oils or fragrance oils derived from natural sources such as essential oils. While there are some fragrance oils made from synthetic ingredients and contain harmful chemicals such as phthalates, not all fragrance oils are toxic. When choosing a candle, it’s important to read the ingredients list carefully and look for natural fragrance oils such as essential oils or natural fragrance oils.
